Celebrating Poetry Month with Fear & Musings!
A brief journey through Fear & Musings...these are a few of my favorite poems!
A Journey from Anxiety to Peace…
The collection of poems in Fear & Musings spans seven years, with the earliest writings coming from 2013, the year my daughter was born.
I had always lived with an undercurrent of anxiety, but when my daughter was born, the anxiety became an entirely different monster living within. From the Introduction, page xix:
Becoming a mother…I was never more aware of my own mortality than the day I left home without my newborn for the first time. While driving down the road I noticed the lack of kicking inside my body and instantly became terrified by the fact that one day I would die and leave my sweet girl behind. In that moment I began to experience anxiety, racing thoughts, and all sorts of worries in a deeper, darker way.
In this abbreviated work from Fear & Musings, I invite you to explore your emotions and the way your body physically feels when experiencing fear and musings. I also ask you to consider developing a personal practice of getting know yourself a little better so you, too, can live unafraid and forever feel embraced in the Divine musings that surround you every day!
but first…something new just for you!

chapter: fear
This poem reflects how anxiety typically felt for me…up until I completed my 200-hour and 300-hour yoga teacher trainings. See if you can notice where the shift happens!
there is no end to the anxious mind
there is no end to the anxious mind
it takes you to the darkness
to the scary side of your imagination
it swallows you into the terrors only nightmares are made of
the chest is tight
the brow furrowed
each sound causes a startling twitch
a gasp and a shock
the veins race with agitated blood
fluid starved for oxygen
eating away at happiness and peace
the anxious mind
there is no end to it
until
you learn to breathe
pause
take a breath
one deep, into the lungs
filling them completely
and another
deep breath
into the fullness of your being
breathing into the root of your soul
feeding the neglected, disrupted organs
that have clung, for years, to what little air you could take in
expand the chest, the body
feel the freedom inside
let loose the shoulders
breathe into being your existence
release the anxious mind from the overwhelming, spinning
thoughts that have chased you in circles for a lifetime
there is an end
and a beginning
breathe
chapter: fear meets its muse
I wrote this one after dropping off my daughter for one of her first days back to school in September 2020. When she was born I had six weeks of maternity leave, and that felt short…but nothing could prepare me for our parting after six months of “pandemic” leave together. That morning I felt some hope, delight and the sunshine after making and eating some warm, buttered bread.
little right actions
the fog sits in the
mountains this morning
the mist lingers over
the lake
my sadness swells from
deep within my heart
to be alone, deep and
utterly alone
the silence hurts my ears and
pierces a hole in my chest
my lungs are dry and weak
legs and arms numb
to lay down I succumb to the
tired, motionless depression
to make toast,
I take one tiny step towards hope
chapter: musings
The first two lines are possibly my most favorite ever written. I repeat them to a little tune in my mind…often, especially when I need a little encouragement or when I feel happy!
mystical me
peace grace beauty be
magical mystical miracle me
intelligent mindful divine I am
serenity inside joyful sweet Lamb
dream of the spirit resurrection rebirth
Lord the Almighty maker of all life on earth
love fills my body my cup overflows
daily my soul lives gives and grows
chapter: prayers
Dear Lord help me find what's right
With your everlasting, glorious light
Madame Moon with your beams glowing bright
Tuck us in, keep us safe all night
Finding Your Poetic Inspiration
Whether you want to write poetry or read poetry…you will find inspiration for your daily life in both.
Writing…to first find your body through movement, grounding, centering to that which is greater than yourself. Then pen to paper…or clickety clack of the keys. Gazing upon an artwork, the sky, the joy in a child’s eye.
Reading…first a pause, breathing fully, expanding the lungs and center of the heart space. With softened gaze, mind open and willing. Moving with each word, line, page. Taking delicate time. Feeling the presence of time…and your body.
If you are seeking, surrendering, hoping, or giving thanks, poetry can help
show you the way
open doors
light your Spirit with the soft fierceness you desire to find
Will you choose one or both…the writing…the reading…?
Find yourself, connected to the energy of the world, the authors, the ancestors of all time…through the words of artists, known and unknown.
Living each day, one breath, one word, one heart…beating in unison to the song of sweet, sweet words.
